Temu's shortcomings that upset users

By Mao Ziyang

Temu is an amazing app.

Tenu is a shopping app that was published not long ago. but it surpassed Amazon to become the top of the list of downloads in a very short period of time. It offers goods at low prices and is therefore highly sought after by the low-income population. Identifying and solving the app's problems can better enhance the user's shopping experience, which may further boost spending. Through heuristic evaluation, problems were identified in Temu app. This blog focuses on describing some of the serious issues with the Temu application on iOS versions that significantly impact shopping and provides solutions to address them.

Issues and Suggestions

Annoying filters

When using a shopping cart, users often add a large variety of items to the shopping cart and list a large number of items, but users do not always want to buy all the items in the shopping cart, in this case, users often need to search for the items in the shopping cart that they want to buy and buy them. Due to the large number of items in the shopping cart, users need to pay attention to reading each item in the shopping cart, and when there are too many items in the shopping cart, it takes a lot of time to view them one by one from top to bottom. At the same time, the shopping cart doesn't allow users to filter items based on the date they put them in the cart, so users who want to find items they viewed days or even months ago and want to buy will have to search from memory, which not only wastes a lot of time, but also requires users to constantly mobilize their memories.

Suggestion:

The solution to this problem is in two parts:

The first part: set up a search box in the shopping cart, so that users can find the products they want to buy directly in the shopping cart by searching.

The second part: add a filter based on the product category and a filter based on the time the product was added to the cart.

Cannot go directly back to the main page

When using Temu to browse for products, the user first selects an offer category from the home page, then selects a product category from that offer category, then selects a product from that product category, and from that product page the user taps on the reviews. This process the user performs four levels of progression. When the user sees the review and wants to abandon the search and go back to the home page for a fresh next search, they need to go back to the main page from this page in the order in which they entered that page. This process is cumbersome and wastes a lot of time.

Suggestions:

A visible button on all pages with the option to go back to the main page of the entire software by clicking on the button.

Users cannot always go back to the top of the currently viewed page.

The page of this software is a common page for mobile apps to swipe down to browse. Users tend to keep sliding down to find the products they want. Since the top part of the main page has information about discounted products, the user may want to browse the top part of the page after a lot of swiping. At this point, the user has only one option, which is to swipe upward little by little. How long the user swipes down is how long they need to swipe up. On the right-hand side of the page there is a dark gray icon inside a red box that shows the vertical position of the page with the swipe icon. This icon gives the illusion that the user can control the slide of the page through this icon, but this icon does not have any function.

Suggestion:
There are two solutions to this problem:
The first one: set a button so that the user can go directly back to the top of this page by clicking on this button.
The second and most recommended method. Enlarge the black slider inside the red box at the bottom right of the picture and set it as a button that users can click and slide. Users can use this slider to control the page slide freely.

Confusing search results

When a user searches for a product using temu and encounters a situation where there is no product that the user has searched for, the software directly pushes the product related to the searched item without explicitly informing the user. Moreover, the webpage does not indicate what kind of error the user is making that prevents them from getting the results. For example, the user searched for soybeans, but the software directly pushed a soy milk machine. There was no explanation of why the product searched for by the user could not be provided, nor was there any explanation of the relationship between the product pushed and the keyword entered by the user. The user is unable to understand how the search results relate to the keyword they entered.

Suggestion:
Give the reasons for not being able to display the products for the keywords entered by the user (e.g., the user made a spelling error, the user's query item is illegal, the site does not sell the product searched for by the user, etc.), push products related to the user's search, and give an explanation of the relationship of the pushed products to the user's searched keywords.

Conclusion

For an app that was so popular right after its publication, Temu is a success. However, I found 4 drawbacks in this app that annoy its users. Such as not being able to go back to the main page, not having buttons to control fast page swiping, and so on. These greatly degrade the user experience. I have suggested some solutions to these problems. I am sure you must have felt some of the problems while using this app as well. What do you think about my suggestions for solving these problems? Are there any other issues with this app that upset you? Share your ideas in the comments!
